Wine and food pairings

I’m not the expert in wine and food pairings but I know a few basics. Like a Moscat/Moscato is a great wine for a sweet dessert like cake or ice cream, but not the appropriate wine for a hearty meal. Yet, as I mentioned in Friday’s post, many of my friends will serve moscato – especially the Golan Moscato — for the ritual blessings on the wine on Shabbat and holidays. Well, apparently this year’s blend – which is always an excellent moscata for the appropriate time – isn’t as good as year’s past. Israel wine critic Daniel Rogov’s tasting notes of the 2007 blend, which has just hit Israeli store shelves, follows:

Golan, Moscato, 2007: Barely frizzante and not as successful as in previous years. Made from Muscat Canelli grapes showing appealing summer and tropical fruits but fails to satisfy because there is not nearly enough acidity to balance the more-than-generous sweetness. Score 81. K (Tasted twice with consistent notes 8 and 9 Nov 2007)

Two famous wine pairings I’d love to try:
Gewurtztraminer with Chinese food; Champagne with pizza.
