Hugh Johnson’s 2009 Wine Report feature Israeli wines

Posted on August 31, 2008

Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Report 2009, to be released in October, lists no less than twenty six wineries. This international guide provides a comprehensive survey of wineries from around the world: France, United States, England, Cyprus, and, of course, Israel. Hugh Johnson’s Wine Report is the largest selling wine book in the world, published annually since 1976. The latest edition of his book contains some new and improved placements for Israeli wine.

Pelter, Tulip, and Vitkin are mentioned for the first time. These are three up-and-coming boutique Israeli wines. Vitkin got some notable attention by Mark Squires of the Wine Advocate recently.

Chillag and Sea Horse return to the 2009 edition, after an absence in the 2008 edition.

Domaine du Castel’s Grand Vin was one of 200 selections and recommendations personally made by Hugh Johnson.

Carmel, Galil Mountain, and Barkan are selected as having particularly good value for their price range.

The wineries listed are:
Three Stars ***: Castel, Yatir, Margalit
Two to three stars **>***: Yarden, Clos de Gat
One to three stars *>***: Carmel
Two stars **: Flam, Galil Mountain, Ch. Golan
One to two stars *>**: Barkan, Dalton, Ella Valley, Pelter, Recanati, Saslove, Vitkin
One Star *: Amphorae, Bazelet ha Golan, Binyamina, Chillag, Sea Horse, Tabor, Teperberg, Tishbi, Tulip, Tzora

Three stars refers to ‘well known, highly reputed wines.’ Two stars represents ‘above average’ wines.

Great note! Pelter is on our team - we should add Vitkin and Tulip this year, as well!
