America has coffee but Israel has wine

For American Jews, the haggadah that they may have used at their Passover seders may have been the Maxwell House Haggadah (and if it still is, might I suggest a replacement!) – old, stale, dumbed down, and boring. And, above all, about coffee. Of course, it was a brilliant marketing move by Maxwell House, to [...]

Wall Street Journal tastes kosher (including Israeli) wines
Posted on April 4, 2008 - Filed Under Kosher and Jewish | Leave a Comment
The Wall Street Journal did a tasting of several kosher (including wines from Israel that happen to be kosher — some of the best but not all of what’s available, by far, and only what’s available in the US) wines from around the world. I need to repeat that Israeli doesn’t equal kosher (particularly as [...]

The kosher conundrum + not all Israeli wines are kosher, not all kosher wines are Israeli
Posted on March 21, 2008 - Filed Under Kosher and Jewish, Wine Basics | 2 Comments
I have said this before and I will say it again: Israeli doesn’t equal kosher and kosher doesn’t equal Israeli. That is to say a very simple thing – not all Israeli wines are kosher and not all kosher wines are Israeli.
Why am I saying this AGAIN (and will keep on saying it)??? Two simple [...]

Will this be good news for Diaspora wine drinkers? Teperberg 1870, Israel’s 4th largest winery (but yet barely known outside of Israel, especially in North America, where so few is imported) has just appointed a new chief marketing manager. From the Jerusalem Post:
ONE OF Israel’s veteran wineries, Teperberg 1870, has appointed Benny Cohen-Weinberg, 39, as [...]
Top 10 Kosher Wines for 2007

Gamliel Kronemer, the New York Jewish Week’s wine writer, has just released his Top 10 kosher wines for 2007. While missing out on many of the great non-certified Israeli wines (Flam, Margalit, Pelter, Clos de Gat, Odem Mountain [going certified starting with the 2007 vintages] and many more), about half the list is Israeli wines. [...]

While Carmel Mizrahi Winery is definitely not my favorite, it is the old man on the block. Founded by Baron Rothschild, who is also the founder of many top French chateaus, in the late 19th century, the history of Carmel is the history of modern Israel. However, for many years that also means that it [...]

So Hanukkah started tonight in Israel and the rest of the world. What That means it’s time for Sufganiyot (jelly donuts) which have been appearing in Israel since after Sukkot (is that like seeing Christmas decorations as soon as Halloween is over in America?). I’m excited. In the Jewish European Diaspora, people will also be [...]

Haven’t watched it yet but Gary Vaynerchuk has the 2003 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon on the latest Wine Library TV. Now, if only he referred to it as Israeli and not kosher (although it is a great wine - like most of Golan Heights Winery - that happens to be kosher)! Why do you think he [...]
